The Longhope Lifeboat Station is especially remembered for the loss of eight men when its lifeboat "T.G.B." capsized while assisting the stricken Liberian cargo ship, the Irene, on 17th March 1969
A memorial to the heroic men was erected at Kirkhope Cemetery by their widows & mothers and unveiled by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother on 9th August 1970
